Life hearing

Life Unlimited Hearing Therapy Services is a national service funded by the Ministry of Health.

We provide a FREE independent service to NZ citizens and permanent residents aged 16 years and over.

Hearing impairment is invisible so does not usually arouse public sympathy. However, it can have a devastating effect on a person’s home, social and work life. Anyone affected by hearing loss may benefit from seeing a hearing therapist. A referral is not required.

If you are concerned about your hearing and want to know if you should have it evaluated click here to do the two minute hearing checklist and/or click here to test yourself on how well you hear in background noise.

If you have trouble hearing, or have a hearing aid but don’t like to wear it, and/or have noises in your head/ears (tinnitus), as a hearing therapist, I may be able to assist you.

Genesis Midwifery is a practice committed to providing safe, professional, compassionate care for women and their families. At the heart of my practice is a devotion to individualised care where women have a birth experience which is positive physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually. I aim to give women and their support people freedom of choice; partnered with evidence based advice. My midwifery partner Wendy and I run a unified team and as a part of your care you’ll also meet her. Having trained as a registered nurse and worked in coronary and intensive care units, I have a sound medical foundation with a passionate desire to provide relational care. After midwifery training in the UK, I practiced for 6 years working with women in high risk pregnancies as well as the water birthing unit. Back home I’ve enjoyed time in core midwifery as well as running antenatal classes. Every mother is different and I love to see women encouraged and empowered to have their best possible pregnancy and birth.

St John sets up new base in
Nelson Nursing Service

 7853 St John

St John Nelson Bays territory manager Matt Wilkinson said the new base would be appreciated in Stoke, as the area had a great number of rest homes.

The Nelson and Richmond population was growing, and St John's services had to adapt to the changing community, he said.

"We need to promptly service that need, and as best and fast as possible."

With increased facilities, St John was able to determine what worked and how best to cater for future needs, Wilkinson said.

"A main focus for us is to see how much we can reduce response times. We owe this to the Stoke community."

It was not so much that response times needed to improve but that St John wanted to uphold an excellent standard of service, he said.

"We will always endeavor to do a better job. We have a mandate where we just try to continually improve."

He said he wanted to particularly thank Nelson Nursing Services and the St John Nelson Area Committee, which helped to bring the venture to fruition.

Nelson Nursing Services director Jill Knight said it had always been a great supporter of St John and vice versa.

Having St John at the Stoke site would provide another piece of the "nursing puzzle", she said.

"We have plenty of room here, and so we see St John as a very worthwhile investment.

"They are very supportive and caring of our people and our service."

The new initiative cost very little, she said.

About Ear Nurse Specialists

In the 1960's , chronic suppurative Otitis media (CSOM) was causing a large problem in communities especially in the isolated rural areas. Dishcarging ears were common and were often accepted as normal. With vision and foresight, Sir Patrick Eisdell-Moore instigated the concept of the Mobile Ear Clinic, to help these children.

Nurses were specially trained to operate this service. There are at present, over 50 nurses employed in the Ear Nurse role, with many attaining the "Specialist Nurse" level. The role has grown over the years and so too has the knowledge and skill. There are now ENS's working in the Outpatient setting assisting with the workload and managing many ear conditions.

The special attributes Pip Mitchell has as an Ear Nurse Specialist include:

In-depth knowledge of ear anatomy
Diagnostic and treatment ability
Referral to specialist services
Support for families
An understanding of conductive and sensori-neural hearing loss
Competency in otoscopy, microscopy, instrument use and aural toilet techniques
Empathy with different cultures
Enthusiasm, motivation, relate well to children and their families
Ability to work autonomously
